Even though my oldest is only 17 and just ending his junior year in high school, most of his friends are seniors and thus getting ready to graduate and move on to the next phase of their lives, which involves bleeding Mom and Dad dry of every last dime they have; AKA college.
Many of my friends with departing seniors have mixed emotions about this change in family dynamics. On the one hand that parental bond makes it hard to let go, but on the other hand just think what you can do with that extra spare bedroom. It’s tears one moment, and “When are you leaving, again?” the next. The dichotomy is enough to make you want to have a (or another) cocktail.
But then again what did we expect? From the time your sweet baby boy pees on you while lovingly changing his diaper to when your overly-developed 16-year-old daughter curses you for not letting her wear a Fredericks of Hollywood black lace halter to a monster truck rally, you are in for a rough ride. Why should their extraction from home be any different?
Oh sure, Mother Nature does kick in with a little help. After your endearing cherub crosses over to the dark side somewhere around the age of 13, it’s sometimes hard to Read the rest of this entry »

Last week Phillipa of the World on a Platter blog awarded me The Lovely Blog Award. An absolutely charming blog hosted by a mom and her two kids, World on a Platter chronicles food, journeys and growing up. Thank you so much, Phillipa, I really appreciate it, and look forward to following your blog.
And if that’s not enough, just today I was awarded the Illuminating Blogger Award by C.J. over at Food Stories, a great healthy eating blog that I’m very excited to get to know better. Thank you so much C.J. If you’re into food that doesn’t try to kill you I highly recommend you check out Food Stories. At the very least you’ll get some great healthy recipes out of it.
Wow. I’m humbly racking up quite a few award badges over here on the right side of my blog, which is great, except I’m running out of bloggers to pass the award on to.
For the Lovely Blog Award award I’m supposed to share seven things about myself and forward the award on to 15 bloggers. For the Illuminating Blogger Award my task is to share one thing about myself and give the award to five bloggers. Being the lazy slug that I am I’m going to cheat and combine both.
So here are seven things about me that few people (but now you all) know: Read the rest of this entry »

Just this weekend I received my official Toastmasters pictures for winning the Toastmasters International Speech Contest at the District level on May 12th. As promised, I’m sharing one with you all now. (To jog your memory from a previous post, I’ve advanced to the semi-finals, where I’ll go on to compete worldwide at the International Speech Contest in Orlando, Florida, August 15-18.)
Also as promised, I’m sharing a video of my award-winning speech, which is entitled Wynton Marsalis Had My Back. It’s about the first and only time my older son, Derrick, met his idol, legendary jazz trumpet player Wynton Marsalis.
If you aren’t into jazz you may not know who Wynton Marsalis is, so let me enlighten you. Read the rest of this entry »

They say the best humor is found in the most serious of situations, and for once I have to agree with the all-knowing THEM. Before we get off the subject of the colonoscopy I had last Monday, I feel the need to come clean about it, so to speak. True, there were no scary results, however, the procedure itself did NOT go well. I had a weird reaction to that lovely cleansing cocktail and had to be rushed to the hospital just hours after I took it.
Me AFTER I drank that nasty stuff
Upon the first sip around 6:00 p.m. Sunday I immediately felt nauseous. But I’d been warned that it’s nasty stuff, so I went ahead and powered down three more rounds of that poo juice every 15 minutes as instructed.
By 7:45 p.m. the only noticeable result was that my abdomen was so distended, not to mention excruciatingly painful, that I looked like the bottom layer of a Krispy Kreme wedding cake. Normally, I have the constitution of a teenage rooster, so this agonizing backup was a new experience for me.
Thinking things just needed a little encouragement I decided to go for a walk. But by the time I got back Read the rest of this entry »

Well, I had an early Mother’s Day gift yesterday in that I won the Toastmasters International Speech Contest at the District level, which means I will go on to compete nationally at the Toastmasters Conference in August in Orlando. There I’ll compete in the semi-finals against the 81 other District winners. If I win this (which granted, is a long shot) then I go on to compete worldwide against the nine top International Speech Contest winners IN THE WORLD. That means I’m only two competitions away from the very top spot. Even if I get eliminated in the semi-finals I can’t believe I’ve come this far.
What was particularly sweet about this win is that my speech is about when my son Derrick met his hero, legendary jazz trumpet player Wynton Marsalis. It’s so nice to be able to take such a poignant piece of my personal history and deliver it in such a way that touches others. Every time I write something close to my heart, I’m always amazed by how many people can relate.
Also, it was a thrill to have my family and several members of my Park City Toastmasters Club there to cheer me on. I was speaker number four out of five, and when I finished my speech, my son, Derrick, Read the rest of this entry »

Hey gang, just a quick post to thank you all for two milestones that fell upon my blog this week.
First off, yesterday my follower tally tipped the 500 mark! In fact, as I write this I think I have 507 followers. This rapid assent has wildly exceeded my expectations. When I started this blog last November I thought it would be a lot like cracking wise alone in the dark, and for a short time it was, but then a few of you found me pretty early on. I don’t know if you loyal followers have been paying people to visit my blog or what, but my readership (and comments) have been growing steadily. Thank you very, very much! I know your time is valuable, so I truly appreciate you giving me a little of it every time you read and comment on my blog.
Second, as I mentioned in Monday’s blog post, last week my blog was approved to be on TopMommyBlogs.com. TMB has over 4,500 blogs posted on their website, and they keep track of the traffic those blogs generate. It’s a great way to increase visibility for your blog, as well as boost your SEO. Well, as of Monday my blog wasn’t even ranked. (I believe you have to be in the top 1,000 before TMB will even pay attention to where you stand in terms of popularity on their website.) But by Tuesday I was ranked Read the rest of this entry »

The other day someone complimented me on what I was wearing. When my admirer asked me where I got my jacket I took a quick inventory of my frocks and realized that everything I had on fell into the “gently-used” category. In fact, I believe my entire outfit cost less than $60 and that included my Kenneth Cole leather boots, which I found for $30 at an adorable little resale shop in Park City.
You see, I am a total freak for thrift store shopping.
I don’t think I’ve paid full price for any item of clothing, other than underwear, since people suffering from Y2K madness hoarded water, baby wipes, and nondairy creamer, right next to their guns and ammo. (Actually, here in Utah that’s still a regular practice.)
Ironically, I will pay $75 for a bra that can boldly hoist my sagging breasts (which due to nursing look like two gym socks with marbles at the bottom) up to new heights, but I WON’T pay Read the rest of this entry »
